Food and culture are near the top of my list of favorite things. My diverse team at work combined the two for an Around the World potluck last Friday.
The ask was simple: Bring a dish to share that represents you. Through our favorite foods, we were transported to nine countries spanning four continents without ever leaving a conference room on Betty Crocker Drive.
Despite the variety, some common themes emerged: Vegetables were conspicuously lacking, with the exception of Iuli’s delicious Romanian Salata de Vignette. Seasonings were on point across the board, from Nneka’s Nigerian Jollof Rice to Alysia’s Jamaican Beef Patties. And I learned that our team really knows how to cook, as evidenced by Monica’s handmade Columbian Arepas and Paula’s homemade-without-a-recipe, smooth as cheesecake coconut flan.
Most interestingly, each dish had memory, anecdote or story to tell. Every forkful helped us learn a little more about our fellow teammates. And every bite made me feel amazed and thankful for the diverse world we live in today.
